- ZIP Fugue License Agreement
-
-
-
- (1) Copyright: The Zip Fugue programs and all other programs
- and documentation distributed or shipped with it are Copyright
- to Fugue Software, 1988, 1994, and are protected by Australian
- and international copyright law. In the rest of this document,
- this collection of programs is referred to simply as "Zip
- Fugue". You are granted a license to use your copy of Zip Fugue
- only under the terms and conditions specified in this license
- agreement.
-
- (2) Use of One Copy on Two Computers: If you have a copy of Zip
- Fugue which is licensed for use on a single computer, you may
- install it on two computers used at two different locations
- (for example, at work and at home), provided there is no
- possibility that the two computers will be in use at the same
- time, and provided that you yourself have purchased ZIP Fugue,
- or if ZIP Fugue was purchased by your employer, that you have
- your employer's explicit permission to install ZIP Fugue on two
- systems as described in this paragraph. The right to install
- one copy of ZIP Fugue on two computers is limited to copies
- originally licensed for use on a single computer, and may not
- be used to expand the number of systems covered under a
- multi-system license.
-
- (3) Use of ZIP Fugue on Networks or Multiple Systems: You may
- install your registered copy of ZIP Fugue on a computer
- attached to a network, or remove it from one computer and
- install it on a different one, provided there is no possibility
- that your copy will be used by more users than it is licensed
- for. A "user" is defined as one keyboard which is connected to
- a computer on which ZIP Fugue is installed, regardless of
- whether or not the user of the keyboard is aware of the
- installation or use of ZIP Fugue in the system.
-
- (4) Making Copies: You may copy any version of ZIP Fugue for
- normal backup purposes, and you may give copies of the
- shareware version to other individuals, which they may also use
- and copy subject to the terms of this agreement. If you copy
- the shareware version of ZIP Fugue for others, you must include
- all of the files distributed with it, including this one. You
- may not give copies of the registered version to any other
- person for any purpose, and you may not make any copies of the
- printed and bound ZIP Fugue manual without explicit written
- permission from Fugue Software.
-
- (5) Distribution Restrictions: ASP Vendors may distribute ZIP
- Fugue as part of their shareware offerings provided they abide
- by the ASP regulations and guidelines. Non ASP vendors may
- distribute ZIP Fugue shareware version provided they distribute
- the entire ZIP Fugue package. They may add files to it, but
- under no circumstances may they remove files. They must also
- inform buyers of their obligation to register the program if
- they continue to use it after a reasonable evaluation period.
- NON ASP vendors must also not charge more than a reasonable
- copying fee for the disks (around $US3 per 360k disk, and no
- more than $US8 for 1.4M disks). Individual copies of the
- shareware version may be passed to friends and associates for
- their individual use provided the entire package is passed on,
-
-

-
-
- and the recipient is made aware of their obligation to
- register. This same applies to hardware vendors who bundle
- shareware with their systems. Specifically, ZIP Fugue is NOT
- free or Public Domain, and you may not represent it as such.
- You may not sell the registered version without express written
- permission from Fugue Software.
-
- (6) Use of ZIP Fugue: ZIP Fugue is a powerful program. While we
- have attempted to build in reasonable safeguards, if you do not
- use ZIP Fugue properly you may destroy files or cause other
- damage to your computer software and data. You assume full
- responsibility for the selection and use of ZIP Fugue to
- achieve your intended results. As stated below, Fugue Software
- limits its warranty to replacement of a defective program
- diskette or manual.
-
- (7) LIMITED WARRANTY: Fugue Software warrants to owners of
- registered copies of ZIP Fugue that the software will operate
- in accordance with the description given in the documentation,
- and that the diskette and manual will be free of physical
- defects which interfere with normal use. For a period of 90
- days from the date of your purchase of ZIP Fugue, Fugue
- Software will, at its sole option and subject to the
- restrictions above and below, repair or replace any defective
- item(s), or refund the purchase price of any diskette and/or
- manual and/or any other parts or components of ZIP Fugue found
- to be defective, if such defect is the fault of Fugue Software
- and not the result of misuse or abuse. Such a refund, repair,
- or replacement shall be your sole remedy for any defects,
- program error(s), or documentation error(s). In no event shall
- Fugue Software be responsible for any other costs or damages
- whatsoever due to errors in usage or your failure to read,
- understand, or follow instructions in the documentation.
- FUGUE SOFTWARE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,

- INTRODUCTION
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ
-
- Why another shell for PKZip & PKUnzip?
-
- PKZip and PKUnzip from PKWare are now the industry standard for
- lossless compression of files. They have a host of features, and even
- support the addition of descriptions to compressed files. However,
- they are also command driven, which makes them difficult to use for
- non experts. In addition, there is no way to add or extract 4Dos file
- descriptions.
-
- There are other shells for PKZip & PKUnzip on the market. Some of them
- are undoubtedly quite good. But what I wanted was a program that would
- let you tag files to add to a ZIP file, and then add them along with
- their 4Dos file descriptions. In the same way I wanted to be able to
- tag the files in ZIP file, and extract them along with their 4DOS file
- descriptions. I also wanted to be able to see the descriptions along
- with the files. None of the available shells I looked at would do
- this.
-
- In 1989 I wrote the first version of ZIP.EXE to do this in a DOS
- environment. When I moved to Windows 3.0, I became fed up with having
- to open a DOS window to go and zip or unzip files. Finally I got
- around to writing a Windows equivalent that could be launched from
- program manager - ZIPW.EXE.
-
- Both these programs serve the same function that of adding files to
- and extracting files from a ZIP file, while automating the add/extract
- of the associated 4DOS descriptions. Of the two, ZIPW is more
- sophisticated, using as it does the Multiple Document Interface to
- permit you to work on more than one ZIP file at a time. One of these
- days I will get around to rewriting the Dos version to provide similar
- features.
-
- Until then, ZIPW is V2.0, while ZIP is only V1.2. Both support the new
- V2.04g of PKZip and PKUnzip which is the latest version at time of
- writing.

- Installation
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ
-
- Windows Version
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- Place the disk in your drive, and from program manager type
- RUN a:SETUP.EXE
- or RUN b:SETUP.EXE
-
- Answer the question about the destination drive. The software
- should be installed automatically, and a Program manager group
- should be created. You can later move the icons to another
- group if you desire.
-
- If you do not have a copy of PKZIP & PKUNZIP, you should then
- follow the DOS installation instructions to install PKZip &
- PKUnzip on your disk.
-
- BBS Files
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
- If you have the BBS version of ZIP Fugue, then all you received was
- the file ZIPW20.ZIP or ZIPW20.EXE, and all the files have been
- archived into this file. In this case you need to extract all the
- files to either your hard disk or your floppy disk before you can
- run SETUP:
-
- From DOS, copy the file to your hard disk and extract the files
-
- for .ZIP type in PKUNZIP -E ZIPW20
-
- for .EXE type in ZIPW20
-
- Then run SETUP from program manager as described above.
-
-
-
- DOS Version
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- Place the disk in drive A: or B: and make that drive the
- default by typing in A: or B: and press ENTER (or RETURN)
-
- Type in INSTALL
-
- Answer the question about the destination drive, and whether
- you want PKZIP and PKUNZIP installed as well.
-
- NOTE - Please ensure that the directory into which you install these
- programs is on the DOS path, as well as the directory in wish
- you have PKZIP & PKUNZIP, otherwise you may find that you receive
- a "File not Found" error from DOS or Windows.

- ZIP FUGUE FOR WINDOWS
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ
-
- The windows version is ZIPW.EXE, which operates as a standard windows
- multiple document interface (MDI) application. This means that you can
- work with multiple ZIP files at the same time. Each ZIP file is viewed
- as a separate (child) window within the main (parent) window.
-
- ZIPW allows you to work with existing ZIP files from which you can
- extract one or more compressed files, or add (or update) files to the
- existing ZIP file. In addition it also lets you create a new ZIP file
- from scratch. You can work simultaneously with any mix of new and
- existing ZIP files. The options that are available for the active
- window will change depending on what kind of file is represented by
- the active window.
-
- When ZIPW launches, its main window is empty, but a menu bar, button
- bar and status line are all visible, as shown below in Figure 1
-
-
- FIGURE 1 - Empty main window
-
-
- Because there is no active file window at start up, the toolbar
- buttons across the top of the screen are greyed out. Similarly, the
- window manipulation options on the Window Menu are also greyed.
-
-
-
- Create New Zip File
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- To create a new ZIP file, select the New item from the file menu. This
- causes a small dialog box titled "New Zip File" to appear as shown in
- figure 2. This dialog is used to name the new ZIP file and to indicate
- the disk and directory in which it is to be stored.
-
-
- FIGURE 2 - New Zip File dialog box
-
-
- Once you provide a name and location for the new ZIP file, ZIPW opens
- a new MDI child window. The window title reflects the new archive's
- name, but it hasn't been created yet. The newly opened window is
- intended to let you indicate which files you wish to be included in
- the new ZIP file. When you have done this, you click on the toolbar
- button "Zip Files" to create the ZIP file.
-
- The new ZIP file window contains a standard list box that lists the
- files to be compressed (zipped), as well as a standard file list,
- directory list, and drive list. These can be used to locate files.
- In addition, the 4DOS or Fugue Software description of the highlighted
- file is displayed in the box below the list. If you do not use file
- descriptions, then this box will be empty.
-
- The file list allows you to mark several files using Window's standard
- Shift Click (mark all between) and Ctrl Click (mark this one too)
- notation. To add the marked files to the list of files to be zipped,
-
-

-
- simply click on the Add File button in the toolbar. You can even
- designate entire directories or entire drives for zipping. To indicate
- this, when the directory list has the focus, the toolbar button
- caption changes from "Add File" to "Add Dir"; and when the drive list
- box has focus, the toolbar button caption changes to "Add Drive".
-
- For example, to add all files in the C:\WF\DOCS directory, highlight
- that directory in the directory list box, and then click on the "Add
- Dir" button. A new entry reading "C:\WF\DOCS\*.*" will appear.
- Similarly, if you highlighted drive "D:" and then clicked the "Add
- Drive" button, an entry reading "D:\*.*" would be added to the list of
- items to zip. This is shown in figure 3.
-
-
- FIGURE 3 - Create ZIP file window
-
-
- When you have finished with the list of items to zip, click on the
- button "Zip Files" to create the ZIP file. ZIPW will create a
- temporary file listing all the file descriptions for the highlighted
- files. If you have selected directories and disks, then the list will
- include an entry for each file in the directory or disk. Those files
- without a description will have a blank line inserted into this file.
- PKZIP will read this file as it zips the items, adding descriptions
- for each item to the ZIP file. ZIPW actually starts PKZIP with the
- correct parameters to create the ZIP file and add descriptions. Some
- of the parameters to PKZIP can be changed - refer to CHANGING ZIP
- OPTIONS later in this document. Once the process has been run, the
- temporary files are deleted.
-
-
- Viewing DOS Files
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- From this window, you can also highlight a file and view it by
- clicking on the View button on the toolbar. The default viewer is
- DOS based, and will allow you to page back and forward in any size
- file. However, you may wish to use your favourite file viewer
- instead. For this you use the INSTALL DOS VIEWER command on the
- Options Menu. See below for more information.
-
-
- Editing Descriptions
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- The description of the highlighted file is displayed. You can edit
- this by clicking on it and typing in a new description. The
- description will be saved automatically when you press Enter or
- click on something else. If you wish to abandon the change, press
- ESC first.
-
- Quit
- ƒƒƒƒ
-
- If you elect to quit the program when you have started work in a New
- Zip file, then ZIPW will prompt you with a dialog box. Answering Yes
- will quit the process, while answering No will return you to the
- program. See Figure 4 on the next page.

- Select the Open option from the File menu, and a dialog box will
- appear that allows you to select the ZIP file that you wish to open,
- as shown below in figure 5
-
-
- FIGURE 5 - Open ZIP dialog
-
-
- After you select the file that you wish to open, ZIPW displays a new
- MDI child window. The title caption reflects the file you have opened.
- The window displays a single scrolling list of files contained within
- the ZIP file, along with their associated descriptions. Options in the
- Options menu (covered below - CHANGING DISPLAY OPTIONS) allow you to
- display file attributes, creation date & time, compressed and expanded
- sizes, and compression ratios.
-
- When the ZIP is opened, the left most button on the tool bar reads
- Unzip all. This option extracts all files from the archive. All
- associated descriptions are also extracted into your 4Dos DESCRIPT.ION
- file (if you have 4DOS on your machine), or into Fugue Software's
- FILEINFO.WF file. If you select any of the files in the list, the
- caption on the left most button changes to Unzip Selected. See figure
- 6 below.
-
-
- FIGURE 6 - The Unzip Window
-
-
- The extracted files will be placed in what ever directory the Extract
- Path option states. If this is blank then they are placed in the
- current directory. See CHANGING ZIP OPTIONS below for more information
- on the Extract Path option.
-
- The second button from the right on the toolbar is labelled Change Zip.
- You use this button if you want to add new files to the ZIP, or refresh
- the ZIP file so that it contains the most up to date copies of those
- files.
-
- When you select the Change Zip button, the window displaying the
- existing ZIP is transformed into a New Zip window. The list box
- displaying the contents of the ZIP file is reduced in width and the
- contents is changed to display only the names. In addition, file list,
- directory, drive and description controls are added to the window so
- that you can select additional files to archive. The toolbar buttons
- also change to reflect those appropriate to a New Zip file. You select
- files and add them to the list, and then select the Zip Files button
- to update the ZIP file. Any files that you don't want refreshed should

- Viewing Files in the ZIP
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- You can actually view a file within the ZIP FILE without actually
- extracting it to disk. This facility is supported by PKUNZIP, so the
- format in which you see the file is limited to what PKUNZIP
- supports. Highlight the file you want to view, and then click the
- View File button on the tool bar. PKUNZIP supports only limited
- functionality, allowing page forward and scroll forward only.
-
- If you want more functionality, you would be better served by
- extracting the file first, and then using your favourite file viewer
- to view the file. This can be done from ZIPW if you install your
- preferred viewer as the DOS VIEWER (see below).
-
- Editing Descriptions
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- Select the files you want to edit descriptions for by use of the
- Ctrl key and clicking with the mouse on each file.
-
- When you have selected all the files you want descriptions for,
- click on the "Edit Descriptions" button on the tool bar. ZIPW will
- run through the selected files, prompting you for a new description
- for each selected file. If there is an existing description, you can
- edit that. If you want to cancel a change, click on the Cancel
- button on the dialog box, or press ESC.
-
- At the end of this process, you will be prompted whether you wish to
- proceed and update the ZIP. If you answer YES the descriptions and
- file names are written to temporary files, and PKZIP is launched to
- read these files. It will run through the ZIP file changing the
- descriptions as indicated.

-
- -t After date only compresses files with a date on or after the date
- you specify. You will be prompted for the date each time you
- activate PKZIP.
-
-
- FIGURE 10 - Date Dialog box
-
-
- PKZIP supports 3 date formats MMDDYY, DDMMYY and YYMMDD. However,
- it will expect you to use the format that you computer uses to
- display the date in answer to the DATE prompt. If you find
- strange results, then it is possible that you computer is using
- American format (MMDDYY - the default) but you are entering it in
- some other format.
-
- -r Recurse sub directories will cause PKZIP to search subdirectories
- underneath the main directory for files that match the
- specifications. You would only use this if you specified wild
- cards (such as *.* or *.2wf) for the files to compress. PKZIP
- will search as many levels down as exist when this option is ON.
-
- If this option is OFF, only the directory you specify will be
- searched.
-
- NOTE - paths are not stored when the "-r" option is specified
- unless you also specify the "-p" option.
-
-
- -P Store path names. By default, PKZIP stores only the 11 character
- file name (filename.ext) in the ZIP files. Using this option
- causes PKZIP to store the full pathname. This is useful if you
- wish to recreate the original paths when you extract files.
-
- NOTE - When this option is used, PKZIP does not store the drive
- identifier nor the leading "\", so if the path were C:\DOS
- and the file is ATTRIB.EXE then the file will be stored as
- DOS\ATTRIB.EXE
-
- -s Password protect files. You will be prompted for a password to
- enter, which PKZIP will use to encrypt the files. You can use
- only one password per run, although you can use different
- passwords for different runs, and the files for each run will
- have their own separate passwords.
-
- NOTE - PKZIP treats upper and lower case letters as different, so
- these passwords are all different:
- secret Secret SECRet
-
- You can enter passwords containing spaces provided you
- enclose them in double quotes "
- eg "mary had a little lamb"
-

- -! Include Authenticity code. If you have an authenticity code from
- PKWARE, then use this option to include it in your ZIP files.
- Authenticity coding ensures that people who receive ZIP files
- from you can check for any tampering with the contents.
-
- NOTE - if you do not have an authenticity code installed in your
- version of PKZIP, then using this option will cause PKZIP to exit
- with an error screen. So DO NOT USE it unless you have Authenticity
- installed!
-
-
- * Compression Method. PKZIP now uses several different compression
- methods, which give differing amounts of compression. The more the
- compression, the longer it takes. Only change this if you find
- that PKZIP runs for hours on your machine.
-
-
- * Include files. When you specify wild cards, PKZIP searches for
- files that match the pattern you specify. By default, files marked
- as Read Only, System, or Hidden are not considered. Only change
- this if you need to.
-
- If you specified files explicitly by name, then the names
- over-ride the file attributes.
-
- * Mask Attributes. When PKZIP stores files into a ZIP file, it
- retains the attributes as they were on the disk, so files that are
- read only are still marked as read only. Masking attributes causes
- particular attributes to be turned off in the ZIP file.
-
-
-
- Changing Unzip Options
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- These options effect the way in which PKUNZIP works. The Zip options

-
- WARNING - PKZIP does not store passwords with the ZIP file, so if
- you forget the password your files are lost.
-
- If you compressed files using a password, PKUNZIP will not
- extract them unless you specify the correct password. If you have
- a number of files in the ZIP, with several different passwords,
- you can extract only those with the same password in any run. You
- will need to do one extract run for each password you used in
- order to extract them all.
-
- Please read the information on Data Encryption in your PKWare
- manual.
-
-
- -o Overwrite destination files. By default, PKUNZIP will not overwrite
- existing files. Instead it will prompt you each time it tries to
- extract a file that already exists. Checking this option tells
- PKUNZIP not to ask, but to go ahead and overwrite any file that
- already exists.
-
- NOTE - If you run PKUNZIP in a hidden window, (See DISPLAY
- OPTIONS below), you would not be able to see the prompt,
- so ZIPW will check to see if files exist before running
- PKUNZIP. ZIPW will ask you whether to overwrite each file,
- and remove it from the list of files to extract if you
- decline to overwrite a particular file.
-
- -d Recreate subdirectories. If you stored paths with the file names
- (using the -P option in PKZIP), then this option will enable you
- to recreate each directory. Without this option, PKUNZIP simply
- extracts all files into the same directory, regardless of
- pathname.
-
- NOTE - if you set the extract path to a directory (say
- C:\abc\xyz\) then all paths will be created under this directory.
-
-
- -t Test ZIP file integrity. This causes PKUNZIP to run through each
- compressed file in the ZIP, verifying that each is correct and
- not corrupted. PKUNZIP will appear to perform all actions it
- would normally take during a ZIP file extraction, except that
- files will not be written to disk. As each file is checked, its
- name will be displayed, followed by OK if it is correct.
-
-
- All files, New Files (-n), out of date files (-f). The first

- retains the attributes as they were on the disk, so files that are
- read only are still marked as read only. When PKUNZIP extracts
- files it retains the attributes as they were in the ZIP file.
- Masking attributes causes particular attributes to be turned off
- when the compressed files are extracted to disk.

- File Descriptions
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- ZIPW supports external file descriptions in 2 formats - 4Dos format
- (40 characters long) or Fugue Software format (65 characters long).
-
- Check the appropriate option here for the description format you
- use. If you don't currently use file descriptions, you should consider
- using them. Instead of seeing a directory full of LETTER.??? files,
- Word Fugue (or 4Dos) will display meaningful description of the files
- (if you enter them).
-
- For example: LETTER.123 is "to Tax Office disputing return",
- and LETTER.049 is "quote for Fred Nurk's swimming pool"
-
- These descriptions make it easy for you to find the file again should
- you need to refer to it.
-
- Not only does ZIPW allow you to add existing descriptions into a ZIP
- file and extract them again, but it also allows you to change the
- descriptions.

- Changing File Descriptions in a ZIP file
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- The display of files in the ZIP file includes the description (if
- the file has one). Because the descriptions are inside the ZIP file,
- PKZIP must be run to do the actual updating. This means that the
- process differs from changing file descriptions for disk files.
-
- Select the files you want to edit descriptions for by use of the
- Ctrl key and clicking with the mouse on each file. This is the
- Windows standard for selecting multiple items in a list. Only the
- items clicked on will be highlighted. If you want to highlight all
- files, there is a short cut: Select the first file in the list, and
- then scroll to the last file. Hold down the Shift key and click on
- the last file. All files between the first and the last will be
- highlighted.
-
- When you have selected all the files you want descriptions for,
- click on the "Edit Descriptions" button on the tool bar. ZIPW will
- run through the selected files, prompting you for a new description
- for each selected file. If there is an existing description, you can
- edit that. If you want to cancel a change, click on the Cancel
- button on the dialog box, or press ESC.
-
-
- FIGURE 16 - Edit ZIP file descriptions dialog
-
-
- At the end of this process, you will be prompted whether you wish to
- proceed and update the ZIP. If you answer YES the descriptions and
- file names are written to temporary files, and PKZIP is launched to
- read these files. It will run through the ZIP file changing the
- descriptions as indicated.

- Dos File Viewer
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
- If you do not like the DOS file viewer that comes with ZIPW, you can
- always use the one you prefer. This option allows you to enter the
- name of the viewer you would prefer to use.
-
-
- FIGURE 18 - File Viewer installation dialog
-
-
- The file viewer must be startable under DOS, and should allow you to
- specify a file name as a a parameter. If your viewer needs other
- parameters, you can include them on the line. If the file name must go
- in a particular position relative to other parameters, indicate this
- by use of a $ character.
-
- If the viewer can be found on your dos PATH, you can enter just its
- name. Otherwise be sure to enter the full pathname so that ZIPW and
- Windows can find the program to launch.

- TECHNICAL NOTES
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ
-
- Shell Program Overhead
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- ZIPW acts as a shell for PKZIP and PKUNZIP, so it adds some overhead
- to using them. It uses more memory than the MS-DOS command line
- utility alone. A skilled user of the DOS utilities could undoubtedly
- produce results faster from the command line than by loading ZIPW,
- negotiating its menus, selecting files from list boxes, and then
- pressing the ZIP or Unzip button to start PKZIP or PKUNZIP.
-
- However, the ZIPW shell offers some serious benefits, not the least
- being the automatic adding of your 4Dos or Fugue Software file
- descriptions. It also allows you to work with multiple ZIP files at
- the same time. Furthermore, it ensures that as long as you click the
- correct switches, ZIPW will send the correct command line parameters
- to PKZIP or PKUNZIP. We believe that these benefits far outweigh the
- relatively minor overheads imposed by the ZIPW shell.
-
-
- Hidden Window
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- The option to run PKZIP and PKUNZIP in a background hidden window
- makes these utilities look more like integrated windows versions.
- However, there are a couple of little tricks necessary to make sure
- this works properly.
-
- The first is the ZIP$.PIF file. This is set to run DOS as a window.
- Without this setting, PKZIP and PKUNZIP always run as full screen DOS
- applications, regardless of whether you ask Windows to launch them as
- hidden background windows.
-
- The second is that in a hidden window, if PKUNZIP encounters any
- problem it will prompt you, but you will never see the prompt. This
- would mean that everything would appear to sit there, doing nothing.
- We have endeavoured to overcome this by having ZIPW check for error
- conditions, and prompt you first. These conditions are them fixed
- before PKUNZIP is launched. However, if you do use the hidden window
- facility, and find that ZIPW appears to hang, then we suggest that you
- kill the process, and run it again from a visible window. That way you
- will see any problems and be able to respond to them. The default for
- ZIPW is to run PKZIP and PKUNZIP as visible windows.
-
-
-
- FIGURE 19 - ZIPW Overwrite dialog
-
-
- Thus if you deselect the -o option, and run PKUNZIP in a hidden
- window, ZIPW will check for each file in the list to see if it would
- overwrite one on disk, and prompt you to confirm that. If you respond
- that the file should be overwritten, ZIPW sets the -o option so that
- PKUNZIP will overwrite the file. It then checks the next file in the
- selection list. If you indicate that a file should not be overwritten,
-
-
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ

- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- ZIPW deselects it, thereby removing it from the list of files to be
- unzipped. This ensures that PKUNZIP will never encounter an existing
- file without the overwrite switch being set.
-
- The third is that you want to see the messages that PKZIP or PKUNZIP
- displays, but since the window is hidden you can't. The trick is to
- redirect the displays from PKZIP and PKUNZIP to a temporary file, and
- then read this file into a scrollable window once the process has
- finished. This requires writing the program command line to a batch
- file, since direct execution of a program ignores redirection
- requests.
-
- The fourth is that the PIF file must have the "Close Window on Exit"
- box checked. If this is not checked, you find that the window becomes
- inactive, and never returns to ZIPW. Since it is hidden, there is no
- way you can close it manually.
-
-
- ZIP Contents
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
- PKWARE publish the format of the ZIP file contents, so ZIPW actually
- reads the ZIP file directory to display its contents. However, the
- compression routines are proprietary to PKWARE, so you still need PKZIP
- and PKUNZIP to compress and extract files.
-
- Multiple Files
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- Because ZIPW takes advantage of Windows MDI interface, you can work
- with several files at once. This gives you the ability to have open
- several ZIP files, and to be able to extract files from each, add them
- to another (new) ZIP file, and even update each of the others.
-
- If you have the same compressed file in more than one ZIP file, you
- can easily identify which version is the latest, and remove the others
- (unless you are in the habit of keeping archival copies of earlier
- versions).
-
-
- Command Line Parameters
- ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
-
- You can include an existing ZIP file as a command line parameter to
- the program, and it launch with that file in an "Existing ZIP" MDI
- window. This also means that you can double click on a ZIP file in the
- File Manager, and it will launch ZIPW with the file as a parameter.
-
- Of course to make this work, you need to use the File Manager's
- "Associate" facility to associate files with the extension .ZIP with
- ZIPW.EXE. Once this association has been created, Windows will
- automatically run ZIPW whenever you attempt to launch a ZIP file
- (either by double clicking on it from File Manager or typing a file
- name with a ZIP extension into the Program Manager's File Run box).

- ZIP FUGUE FOR DOS
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ
-
- The program supports both 4DOS DESCRIPT.ION files as well as Word
- Fugue's FILEINFO.WF files. The program can also automatically sense
- when you are running 4DOS, and switch accordingly. This program was
- written first, and does not support multiple documents. You can work
- with one zip file at a time, and you can either extract files or
- compress files, but you must restart the program to change from one to
- the other.
-
- You need PKZIP & PKUNZIP to be able to use this program. The
- registered version of ZIP Fugue supplies the latest version of PKZIP &
- PKUNZIP, however, the shareware one does not.
